Moraig Hewitt

I am originally from Scotland, but have been in Yorkshire for almost 20 years. I live in the Dales and love seeing the changing seasons and wildlife that surround the house. I started sewing 10 years ago as a hobby, but it became more of an obsession and is now my business. I studied embroidery with City and Guilds, using human anatomy as my inspiration, creating cushion panels with designs based on kidney micro structures, bowls based on the pelvic bone and a hanging using shapes derived from nerve pathways. In my previous life, I was a renal dietitian and I just can’t seem to let the scientist part of me leave completely. I have also developed a body of work based on pendulums and the movement seen during a pendulum wave. I enjoy creating abstract designs – organic shapes (particularly from anatomy) are the basis for my work. I prefer to not make loads of the same item, so everything I make is unique. Hand dyeing cloth and threads as well as free-machine embroidery mean no two items can ever be the same. Recently, I completed an Education and Training course and have been delivering sewing workshops for complete beginners. I love doing these, because if I hadn’t had that chance, I wouldn’t be here now, I particularly enjoy seeing someone progress and gain confidence through craft.
