Moraig Hewitt – About me

Originally from Scotland, I have been in Yorkshire for over 20 years. I live in the Dales and love seeing the changing seasons and wildlife that surround the house. I returned to sewing over 10 years ago as a hobby, it became an obsession and is now my career.

I have studied and qualified with City and Guilds; first in embroidery, and more recently in patchwork and quilting. I have used human anatomy as my inspiration, creating cushion panels with designs based on kidney micro structures, bowls based on the pelvic bone and a hanging using shapes derived from nerve pathways. In my previous life, I was a renal dietitian and I just can’t seem to let the scientist part of me leave completely.

I enjoy creating abstract designs – organic shapes are the basis for my work. I prefer to not make multiples of the same item, so everything I make is unique or one of a small batch. Hand dyeing cloth and threads as well as free-machine embroidery mean no two items can ever be the same.

During my career as a dietitian, I was used to delivering teaching to patients individually and in groups. To help me build on this experience, I qualified in adult Education and Training and thoroughly enjoy teaching one-to-one and groups. My latest achievement was teaching a series of workshops at the Harrogate Knitting and Stitching Show.- a fantastic chance to share my passion for sewing and help others develop their skills.
